It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Squarespace. When I made the decision to start a blog, I was so grateful to happen across this all-in-one platform for building my website.
For those of you who haven't heard of Squarespace, it is a web-based system for creating and hosting a website. It's perfect for bloggers, shop owners and online entrepreneurs. Basically, anyone who needs a website should check out Squarespace! (if only they had an affiliate program...LOL)
Today, I'm sharing my top 10 reasons that I recommend Squarespace for YOUR blog. By the end of this post, you'll know exactly why I love Squarespace so much and why I encourage you to check it out for yourself!
Before we get started, I wanted to elaborate a bit on Squarespace's blogging capabilities. Not every template has a blog feature, so I simply recommend doing your research on Squarespace's Support page. But once you do find a template that works for blogging, Squarespace makes it simple!
Cultivate Grace is created on a Squarespace template that has blogging capability, and it even allows me to include a sidebar. It was easy to set up, and even easier to maintain. Feel free to comment or contact me here if you have any other questions about blogging with Squarespace!
Now, let's get to the good stuff... Here are the top ten things I love about Squarespace:
1. Drag-and-drop website building = no coding skills needed!
This was huge for me when I was first starting my blog. I wanted something that would be simple and easy to learn. Every page on your website is made up of "blocks" that you drag and drop to arrange how you'd like them. So this is a text block, the image above this is an image block, and so on.
Squarespace really provides the best of both worlds - easy to use for beginners AND the ability to add custom code. They recently added the ability to purchase and host your domain name through Squarespace too, so they really became a one-stop shop. Perfect!
2. Mobile-friendly, responsive design included
Well, I can pretty much stop here, because mobile-friendly websites are EVERYTHING these days. Seriously. Over 80% of my traffic comes from people using mobile devices. Wow!
So, when you're choosing a website design, be sure to look for one of these buzz words: mobile-friendly and/or responsive design. Basically what these mean is that your blog is going to look good on a phone or tablet. Squarespace actually allows you to preview what your website will look like by resizing the window on your computer. Simple!
3. Built-in Features - Amazon Associates
The next few of my favorite things are focused on the built-in features that Squarespace offers. Other blog hosting services require plug-ins and you have to search for the right one. With Squarespace, most of these common features are already built right in and all you have to do is activate them!
My top favorite is the Amazon Associates feature. It allows you to connect your affiliate account with Amazon to your Squarespace website. When you want to add a product link to a page, you simply insert an Amazon block, search for the product, select it, and you're all set! No need to leave Squarespace to get a link. How about them apples??
4. Built-in Features - Pinterest
Raise your hand if you LOVE Pinterest! (It's okay, me too...) But seriously, Pinterest can be a game changer for bloggers, and it's also a major source of organic traffic. Squarespace has some tools built-in for Pinterest.
First, the Pin It button when you hover over images is automatically ready to be set up in your Squarespace settings. You just have to go turn it on and customize the button's appearance. Second, when you set up your Pinterest as a business account and enable rich pins, Squarespace is ready to communicate with Pinterest to track your analytics. So easy!
5. Built-in Features - Mailchimp
Do you have an email list for your blog? If you don't, you should definitely set one up! Start building your list NOW, so you can begin building a loyal following. Another major benefit of Squarespace is the built-in integration with Mailchimp.
Once you have an account set up with Mailchimp, you can add a newsletter sign-up block in Squarespace that connects to your Mailchimp account. It will automatically add new subscribers to your Mailchimp email list, and you can set it up without ever leaving Squarespace!
6. Built-in Features - SEO tools
If you're like me, the concept of SEO is kind of like a foreign language. Search engine what?? I totally get it! That's why this feature of Squarespace is so amazing.
Squarespace automatically builds in all known SEO best practices into your website. Sometimes, you have to enter information like your business name and description, but most of the time, it's already done for you. Sa-weet! Check out this article from Squarespace Support if you're interested in learning more.
7. Built-in Features - Image Editor
Maybe you're a professional photographer and take amazing images that you edit in Lightroom or Photoshop before uploading to your blog. And if you are, that is wonderful! But chances are, you're taking photos with your smartphone and emailing them to yourself. And that's okay too, sis!
The good news is that Squarespace has it's own photo editor built in. Kind of like Instagram, you can crop, resize, brighten, frame and filter your pictures before posting. Just insert an image block, upload the image, and click edit! Easy peasy.
8. Customizable Templates
Just like WordPress has themes for blogs, Squarespace has templates for websites. You start by choosing the overall template you like, and then with the Style Editor, you can customize the colors, spacing, and overall appearance of your blog. If you're good with code, you can do a TON more to your site!
My favorite part about the Squarespace templates is that even though several websites may have the same template, it can be hard to tell that after some design customization! For help with customizing your blog on Squarespace, I highly recommend the Elle & Company Design blog.
9. User-Friendly Support Page
I honestly can't say enough about these last two features of Squarespace. Any time I have a question about how to do something, all I have to do is Google "_______ + Squarespace" and every time, the first result is from Squarespace's own Support pages.
Even better, the answers I find on their Support pages are actually helpful! On the more common questions, like about blocks or SEO, there are VIDEO explanations. Seriously. Being able to actually see the answer to my question makes it so much easier to understand!
10. Top Notch Customer Service
This is absolutely what made my decision to go with Squarespace for my blog. When my free trial was nearing the end (did I mention they have a 2-week free trial? It's so fun to get started on your website! And you don't have to pay a dime!), I was having some issues with our Internet service.
So I emailed the Squarespace team and they extended my trial another week! It was a huge blessing and it definitely gave me respect for their service. Especially when I received a response within an hour of my email! Although that's not always the case, I generally receive a reply within 12 hours or so.
Was that helpful? I certainly hope my perspective will help you make your decision easier! Let me know in the comments if you have any additional questions.
Every week, I like to share a quick action step that is designed to help you simplify various aspects of your life or business. This week, it's time to do your own research into blogging and website platforms.
Start by making a list - which blogging platforms have you heard of and want to know more about? WordPress? Squarespace? Blogger?
Then, take some time to read blogs and recommendations about each one. As I mentioned previously, a great resource on Squarespace that I highly recommend is Elle & Company. Lauren Hooker has some amazing tips on blogging with Squarespace!
Once you've read through some reviews, go back to your list and write in some pros and cons for each one.
You'll want to consider what you will be using your website for - is it a blog? Or will you be promoting your brick & mortar business? Will you have an eCommerce shop? Be sure to take all of these things into consideration. You'll want a platform that supports all your needs.
From there, it's pretty simple - which platform serves you best? Is there one that really stands out to you? Take some time to check it out! Squarespace offers a free trial, and WordPress.com is free to sign up.
Share in the comments below what platform you choose! Or if you already have your own website, how did you choose your platform? What do you love most about it?
I can't wait to hear from you!
In His grace,
