I've spent countless hours over the past year trying to figure out my purpose...
Over and over again I would search Pinterest for "how to find your purpose" in hopes of finding an article written by someone who knew what this felt like.
It is an overwhelming feeling of knowing that I was made for MORE, that just making it through my days wasn't ENOUGH, that there had to be a greater PURPOSE for my life.
If that's you right now, I just want to encourage you to hang in there. God DOES have a greater purpose in mind for you, and you truly were made for more.
To be truthful, I don't think I can say that I've fully found my purpose yet... And maybe there's always a bit of searching in this journey we're taking with the Lord...
But I do believe God's given me a few insights that I want to share that have gotten me to where I am today, closer to my purpose than ever before.
DISCLAIMER: You can't do this on your own.
It makes me laugh writing it now, but it's true - you'll never figure out your true purpose on your own. Believe me, I tried.
For so long, I thought if I just searched hard enough and dug deep enough into my experience, knowledge and passions, that I would somehow uncover the purpose that had been awaiting me my whole life.
But it just doesn't work like that.
Think about it... We didn't create ourselves, did we?
Nope, you were CREATED by the God of the universe who knows you and loves you and calls you to fulfill a purpose.
Jeremiah 1:5 says, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart."
The bible repeatedly affirms with verses like this that God has a plan, a purpose, a will, a calling for His people.
And because of that, we cannot understand our purpose on our own.
"'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' declares the LORD. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.'" Isaiah 55:8-9
I love this scripture in this context because:
- It encourages me that God DOES have a greater purpose for me, one greater than I can even understand.
- It reminds me that I cannot discover that purpose on my own. I need God to show me the way, one step at a time.
That's what we must do today, as well. So as you begin to uncover your God-given purpose, I encourage you to ask the Lord to show you the way.
Start by praying now for God's help and strength in this journey.
Finding Your Passions
I believe that one of the first pieces of your "purpose puzzle," if you will, is determining your passions.
God has given us passions that align with His heart. They are what truly lights us up, gets us out of bed and energized, what brings joy to our hearts.
Here are a few steps to determine what your passions are:
1) Make a list of what you LOVE to do.
Be sure to include things that you really enjoy, even if you haven't done them in awhile or haven't had time for them lately. Think about what really sets your heart ablaze.
2) Take a trip down memory lane.
What did you love doing as a child? Think back to when you were little... How did you spend most of your time? What were you always doing? What did you want to be when you grew up? These things can all give you insight into your true passions, even now as an adult.
This just might be the most important step. And it might feel a little uncomfortable at first.
Take a moment to forget all the striving and to stop all the trying.
Allow yourself to finally stop chasing meaning. RIGHT NOW.
Give it all to God in a moment of true surrender. He's got you, remember?
His purpose for you is greater than you can imagine, greater than all the plans you've been making and all the dreams you've just written down.
So, give in and let Him have your whole heart. Just whisper this simple prayer:
I surrender, Lord.
Every week, I like to share a quick action step that is designed to help you simplify various aspects of your life or business.
I believe prayer is such a vital aspect of discovering your purpose. So this week, I challenge you to spend time in prayer on each of these prompts. You could do them all at once, or spend 15 minutes a day praying & journaling through them.
No matter how you go about it, the most important thing is staying close to the Lord and pressing in to your passions to find your purpose.
- Ask God to take this journey with you, to begin revealing your purpose.
- Thank God for the gifts He's given you. Ask how you can use them to His glory.
- Pray over your passions. Ask the Lord to show you how they're aligned with His heart.
- Ask God to begin revealing how He wants to use you in His kingdom.
- Pray this simple prayer: I surrender, Lord.
Tell me in the comments which prayer you're most connected with, so I can be praying it with you!
In His Grace,
